First of all it is a fact that the light bulb is good! However it would pay to have it checked out. But at the time it happens, I would immediately pull over and check to see that the engine has enough oil, water, and no broken belts, hoses or obvious stuff. If you have a problem with these things it could spell the end to an engine rather quickly! On the other hand sometimes even the mechanic can't immediately figure out the problem, - even with diagnostic equipmentl But generally it means some sensor is detecting a problem with engine performance, - or the sensor itself is defective.

Usually a check engine light means that there is a fault somewhere in your emissions system. If you take your car to a repair shop they can pull the code from the on boad computer in your car and tell you what fault in the system caused the light to come on.

Something is wrong with the emission control system that needs to be fixed. Could be any one of a number of things, from a loose fuel filler cap to a bad catalytic convertor, to a bad sensor, to bad wiring. Need to have the diagnostic code read by a garage and go from there.

It means to check the engine. Go to a service center and have them run a diagnostic or you can perform an OBD yourself. Simply search for your make and the On Board Diagnostic and it will explain how and provide codes.

Lot of good answers but there are some simple things to check suck as is your gas cap on, did you turn it till you heard three clicks. did your replace the gas cap?, if so got the right fit. reason why i ask this is because with the gas price jumping so high lots of people been purchasing lockables which really dont fit newer gas tanks, dont need them most new tanks are imposible to syphon, at least thats what i have read.

most of the time it is the O2 sensors, it is an emission failure light based upon the mileage an O2 is probably needed, it is easy to replace unscrews like a sparkplug but you need a special socket to remove it
