Compaqs are not a good idea!! I have a Dell notebook and paid a little over $750 total for it.

Compaq (owned by HP) is not a good brand, Dell used to be very good for service, but they aren't quite as good any more. You can get a very good Lenovo for 800 - 900 right now (it's the thinkpad brand, they bought it from IBM, but they are better than the IBM thinkpads...)

neither compaq or dell... purchase the ibm thinkpad man, i have used dell and compaq, those brands are nothing compared to ibm.... and ibm has the best technical support in the world...
and it will cost you $800 or $900

no compaqs are bad news, you can get a decent dell for that money.
