I just read an article that suggests the possibillity that we never actually went to the moon. That it was a conspircy and all the footage was done on a sound stage. It really makes you think!

The reason we can't return to the moon right now is because there are no rockets available to make the trip. All of the launch, life-support, and landing hardware has been trashed or is in museums. With enough money to construct and/or refurbish required equipment we could return to the moon.

As for the lunar landings being faked, if you REALLY want the truth take a look at this website. It totally and scientifically debunks each and every one of the so-called "proofs" that men never walked on the moon ==> http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

The reason is because of the lack of funding and technology. None of the space shuttles we have now are powerful enough to get anywere near the moon. The Saturn V rockets were the only Space transportaions that were powerful enough to reach the moon, and all of them are decomissioned and all on display at museums. Besides, the technology on that junk is decades old. I mean 1960s old! Do you really want to pilot a rocket with technology about 40 years old!?

Also, funding is a big thing. We would need to supply several days worth of food. Also, we need to fund for training, gear, etc. So, therefore, the moon may not seem far, but it will be a while before we visit it again.

Because all of the people who built the Saturn V rockets that propelled us to the moon are either dead or retired. The art of making that rocket was lost when America stopped going to the moon in December 1972. Just so you know, Apollos 18, 19, and 20 were scrubbed, but the rockets for them were already made!! Go to Florida to Kennedy Spaceport or to Houston to the Johnson Space Center and you will find 2 Saturn V rockets laid out end to end! Those were to be Apollos 19 and 20!

The sad fact is that all of the little details that made those rockets were lost. It would take 10s of years probably to re-learn that craft.

So no, even if they started tonight, it would take a long, long time before we could go to the moon again.

Its because we are dealing with a group that knew one way and one way only of getting to the moon and back. NASA has never changed its mind set on how you get to the moon. mean while, the technology has changed for the better if you are willing to take the risks using it.

commercial space craft building and first flights are suggesting that there can be many different ways of achieving orbit, leaving orbit and returning to earth so much differently than the large rockets of the 60s and 70s.

you can bet that when we return to the moon, it wont be because of NASA: it will be because it will be commercially lucrative to go there by common people. when a profit can be made, we will return.

Partly because the equipment used for previous moonshots has all been decommissioned as someone else pointed out and partially because most of the people that knew how to do it are no longer at NASA, in fact many of them are deceased. They didn't even use calculators for the early moon shots - just slide rules. Most of the capability was wrapped up in the people, just like most companies today.

NASA isn't the organization they used to be, their mission has changed and therefore their capabilities have changed.

Well, most of the conspiricy theories were shot down by scientists. However, to answer your main question, going to the moon would be VERY expensive these days. Things were a lot cheaper back then, and we weren't very safe either. You could say we got really lucky that the moon landing was safely executed.

But yeah, basically we don't have the money.

Because Politicians made budget cuts, resulting in us having to just ponce around with Shuttles & Space Stations in low-Earth orbit.

And as has been said (at least 10 or more times in the last month), those who claim the moon landings were faked are idiots who have the scientific knowledge of a pile of elephant manure, as proved here: http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

The Apollo Missions were expensive and complicated for its' day. Today the expense would be for a better choice of words, astronomical. Design and physics of a moon mission are feasible however public interest and political environment hinders such a daunting task. Data records indicating travel time of voice and data show distance was accurate for moon distance.

We went to the moon for political reasons that were veiled as scientific research. The capability is better now than in those days but it lacks any substantiative justification. There are only so many dollars budgeted for space science and right now I feel it is best spent on identifying, tracking, and diverting comets and asteroids that could cause mass extinction.

I don't think we would use the same type of Saturn launch vehicle for a Moon trip today. We'd probably use the shuttle to launch components into low earth orbit, assemble and launch the moon craft from there.
