The Beatles, The Stones, Queen, RHCP, they are/were four of them. Nirvana, Cream - three. Guns 'N Roses - five. What's ideal? I'd say four. A drummer, a bassist, a guitarist and a singer. And the singer can play the keyboards.

I like either 4 or 5. There must be a drummer, bass, and two guitar players. If any of those can also sing you're set. If not another member is needed to sing.

Five: rythm and lead guitars, bass, drums, and singer. Or four if the singer also plays one of the instruments.

Depends on your style of music. INXS has 6. I think 4 would be the best though if you do the basic, vocals, guitar, bass and drums.
