I am American myself and I asked a similar question on this site, yet i may have phrased it offensively since many took offense. I asked who thought Americans were arrogant and dumb. Many foreigners thought that Americans are. What I think is: America is a very powerful country and with this comes big weights, people tend to be more arrogant and closed-minded since they think America is so great and other countries do tend to be jealous. I have experienced it being born and living here, some are that way, yet there are many who are not arrogant or dumb but open-minded, and they have to take the stereotypics.

Well, I don't think it has anything to do with the wealth or richness. There are other rich countries in the world. A lot of other countries have a much higher per capita GDP than the US (arguably a measure of the countries richness) See http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2004rank.html
It has nothing to do with the ignorance of the people. 50% of India is illiterate. A lot of other countries have a higher proportion of violent, illiterate and ignorant people.
Is it a combination of the two. perhaps
But, coming from another country, i can tell you that the one thing that bothered me most is the U.S.A's asinine foreign policy. Total inability to understand and adapt to sensitivities of other cultures or countries. Interfering with other countries' domestic policies, when the US itself is hardly an ideal democracy. And well WARs. The US has been in more wars than any other country in the world. The US is responsible for the deaths of more innocent people than anyone else in the world. No wonder, everyone hates this country. The world would love to live with a benevolent power. But while the rest of the countries have moved into the 21st century, the US thinks that the solution to every problem is WAR.
So to sum it up FOREIGN POLICY.

Because the CIA knocks off every promising leader in the poorest of countries and never gets any of their information right; because after 9/11, instead of behaving sensibly, maturely, we had a president who, in order to further his own agenda, invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, without compunction, and 79% of americans agreed that being vengeful and war-mongering were good things to do. America is only as good as its leaders and right now those leaders are bought and paid for - sound like something you would love?

Actually not everyone hates americans. A lot of people love us because we are a symbol of freedom to the poorer countries and we bring hope to them. For instance in Iraq, there people like us a lot more because now they don't have to fear that their leader will test chemical and biological weapons on them. They also no longer fear that their leader's sons will take away their daughters to rape them.
