Off the top of my head: There are many different learning styles some formal ie classroom based text book and lecture and some informal ie Hands on experiments with multiple possible outcomes. There are blends of this type all across the educational spectrum."Important and valuable lessons" is going to be a personal judgement call..IS IT important and valuable knowledge to an Eskimo of the life cycle of the Fire ant.
In a practical daily living sense probably not but in an intellectual awareness of insects in general and of nature it can be both important and valuable. We are taught from a young age , to talk to walk, to use tools, feed ourselves, read and write..
On our own through this same period we are learning experientially about the world around us through touch ,taste sight and sound.
When we make the leap to the school system and formal learning begins , our own personal ability, memory patience and reading skills combine to create our learning style..Do we absorb and retain information by reading, do we remenber best by re writing and memorizing..are we best at hands on projects building and cutting or as most people are a mix of all learning styles. The words valuable and important are personal and sometimes societal judgements as we mature we learn to place our own premiums on these expressions as we decide for ourselves what we wish to learn and how we are best able to gain the knowledge that we seek. For some its a trades and technical school with a blend of fundamentals and hands on work experience..for others its the pure academic route of graded papers and research assignments in the groves of academe. No matter which route you choose to take..you will find your life will invariably come in contact with several facets of the educational spectrum and as a wise man once said" Learn from other peoples mistakes..you'll never live long enough to make them all on your own"
