First, tell her to stop taking her calcium. It is a common misconception that taking calcium supplements will help with bone loss in women. The opposite is actually true. Cultures that don't drink milk, take calcium supplements and only ingest 100 mg of calcium from vegetables a day - like China - have no word for "osteoporosis." Calcium is used by every muscle cell in the body to contract, and magnesium to relax. Add a magnesium, if you like, and it would be a great idea for her to eliminate dairy and wheat for a week or two to see if she improves. You might be suprised that it works quite well.

Back spasms are QUITE painful! You can try heat packs to help ease the muscles, or see your family physician for a script of muscle relaxants (Naproxen works well). Before doing anything straining, remember to stretch, which may seem simple but is one thing most people forget. Hope it helps!

Well some people don' t like them but I think they are very good. Chiropractors!! and they are not that expensive if you have insurance.
The other thing, is if the back spasm is in her lower back, side under her rib cage area, try lowering your pillow, sleeping on the opposite side to unkink the compression on the nerve in the spine, or get in a hot tub. Chiropractors recommend ice, but it's all a matter of preference I think; Ice is good for nerve compression, and heat for muscle aches and pains.

Doctors can prescribe muscle relaxers and pain killers. When I am in the process of having one my doctor told me to have someone massage where the spasm is occurring (if it doesn't hurt too bad)!!

Her doctor can prescribe muscle relaxant medications to halt the spasms... She can also get a vibrating heat pad to apply massage therapy precisely to the area bothering her.
