any tips for recording ghost voices?

some friends and i have recently visited a haunted train crossing bridge and went there one night with a digital recorder to just see if we could get some voices of the ghost who haunts the area, just for fun. but after we reviewed the recording we can distinctly hear the womans voice whisper into the microphone saying 'I'd like your *** to burn'

i would like to know if anyone has any tips on recording or speaking to the dead. obviously this spirit is not a friendly one so if there are any precautions that might help us out too that would be great


anything at all will really help us out, we're planning on going back and need to be ready

okay, there are a few ways that things like that can be documented... most of which are not easy. the way that I've found that works good, is go out there with a tape recorder, keep yourself calm, try not to show any fear of where you're at. Sit down and turn the tape recorder on. (make sure you have a very long running tape) and just start to have a conversation, once you're all a little comfortable with where your at and the likes, start trying to talk to 'them'. Once you've been in an area for a while and the energies settle down, if 'they' are out there, they settle and be curious (provided there wasn't a tragic death where the spirits are angry) and you may not hear them, but just say things like 'if you're out there, don't fear us, we don't mean to upset your balance' or something like 'we'd like to help answer your questions' just TALK to them... candles are good too, as flashlights illuminate dust particles and candles offer a warm soft glow. try to find out the history of the place, and relay that into your conversations. just let the recorder go until the tape runs out. then when you get home, play it back, but you have to turn the volume up VERY loud, because if you can catch them on the machine, they are extremely hard to hear... that's why people use techniques that they can transfer into a computer and isolate the different sound waves.

Now if you really want to dabble in this stuff... take a ouija board out there... but that can get really strange and sometimes you find things you don't want to find... so best to stick with trying to lul them into talking to you.

Most spirits that stay on this plane, are looking for someone who can help them, and once in a while, they'll find a subtle way of letting you know they're there.... but just talk to them, it can help keep them calm and respectful. Sometimes it can help the group of people to gather in a circle and create a 'protection circle' around you, just stand holding hands and picture a blue ciricle around your group that will keep harm out.... that way, you'll only get the friendlier spirits.

hope this helps... I don't recomend dabbling in this stuff, especially if anyone in the group is 'sensitive' to any form of spiritial energies... but if you're determined, try those methods!

Walkie talkies and cell phones will sometimes pick up things, you wont really be able to understand them, but you may be able to hear things.... but you can't really record that...

As a ghost hunter and lead investigator of the group here is what we do. First off, since you know that the spirit is not to friendly protect yourself spiritually. Pray for protection if you are christian, use a white light sheild what ever you do in your religion to protect yourself.

Secondly use a good quality recorder and a external microphone. Using the internal mic you will get the machine noise generated by the recorder. I have both a dvr (digital voice recorder by olympus {the best one I feel} and a microcassette recorder. Make sure your batteries are fresh and use new tapes. When you go check the weather, if it is to windy then evp recording will be useless all you will get is wind noise, unless you have a wind sock on your mic.

Next, do not go alone at least 3 people should go. That is for saftey reasons and for witnesses as well to anything you may get.

Next when you are recording do not whisper, your voices can be mistaken as evp's if you whisper. Speak in a clear and direct tone. When you ask questions start simple. Ask things like Whats your name?, Why are you here, ect and progress from there. Also give about 10 to 30 seconds of time in between for the spirit to answer. They don't always answer right after the question.

Do not get insulting or demanding to the spirit. Since you know it is not friendly you do not want to provoke it to the point of injuring anyone present (and they can throw things). If you want to Bate them be confrontational but not beligerent. Do not use swear words, it is just dumb.

Finally don't expect to get anything, ghosts and such do not perform on que. They are in control and can be present and silent if they wish to be. Also remember do not panic! If you panic and run you could end up hurting yourself by tripping in the dark and such.

When you go to listen to your recordings, make sure it is quiet. Evp's come in 3 categories. Class 3 audible voice but cannot make out the words. Class 2 Audible voice but barely make out the words or only a few. And class 1 clear audible voice perfectly understandable.

If you have an audio analyzer on your computer download the recording in full on to it and listen through head phones (not earbuds they don't have a clear enough range). You may need to get a patch cord from radio shack. The evp's will be faint most likely or if you're lucky you will get a class 1 but they are rare.

Get a quality recorder to set near the area where the voice was heard. (digital recorders are best, but tape will work) Turn a television on to a channel that has no station playing but has a lot of static. A constant fuzzing type of noise. Since there is no TV to use at the bridge just use two tape recorders and record the static. A radio can be used as well for the static. Turn the recorder on and wait for it to play out. Keep quiet as possible while recording. It's a form of EVP, Electronic Voice Phenomena. If there is anything to hear it will come up on the recorder eventually. May have to try more than once. Play the recorder, or radio, with static on it and record with the other at same time.

If you are only wanting to do this for kicks, then by all means, bring in the Ouija boards and psychics. If you want to be taken seriously at all, leave that claptrap behind and focus on the scientific collection of real data.

There are a few ways that I know, but i would personally not like to try them. You really shouldn't get to deep into contacting spirits but the only way that something terrible could happen is if you disrupt the dead too much.

What you need to do is get a tape recorder or digital voice recorder that is voice activated (I like these because I don't have to spend aeons going through tapes with nothing on them.) . As questions such as "is anyone here", "do you need to communicate with someone". Be very respectful. Do not tease them or provoke them like they do on TAPS and other TV shows. It's stupid and immature. These were people on earth at one point. Treat them as such.
