I was JUST gonna say that!!! But for a different reason. The sheriff shot the deputy because he found out the deputy was sleeping with his wife. But the sheriff didn't know that the deputy was Bob's brother, and Bob wasn't havin that....so he capped him. End of story.

The sheriff shot the deputy and the person telling the tale shot the sheriff. It is supposed to be about a 'bad cop', but who would believe you if the deputy can't tell his side? Does that help? I hope so!

The song really doesn't say, does it? But the sheriff was waiting for the singer, it does sort of imply that the singer is being set up. The song doesn't mention anyone else. I always thought it had to be the sheriff.
