The Godfather is a sweeping epic about family loyalty, no matter how misplaced, and about the destruction of a man's soul. The story of Michael Corleone roughly follows that of King Lear. Once Michael allowed himself to be taken in by the trappings of the criminal empire, he could not stop himself from being consumed by it. His rise and fall is contrasted with that of his own father, who was a product of his circumstances and made the best out of his tumultuous youth and built a criminal empire almost out of necessity. He never wanted that lifestyle for his son Michael, but Michael allowed himself to get sucked into it anyway.

As Michael gets older, he does not do so with the grace and the peace that his father enjoyed. Rather, he is an troubled old man, weighted down by the evil choices he has made in his life, and unable to pull free of them completely. He dies broken and blind in spite of his tremendous wealth.

There is so much more to these movies. It is not simply a film (or three) about bad people; it is a study of how different people handle bad circumstances.

It is a movie based on how the Mafia and organized crime came to power in the United States. There is fiction mixed in with fact and the end result is an exciting epic story. That is what literature and film is all about.

The film "The Passion of Christ" is the story about Jesus Christ and it contains many graphic passages, yet it too was a very successful movie.

Why are you so amazed?

We could all sit down and watch a documentary about flowers growing in a field but I think we would all get bored after the first 30 minutes.

BTW; Sonny is not the same as sunny . . .

It's very much about human nature and is deep as any Shakespeare or Greek tragedy: love for friends and family & hate for enemy. The irony of achieving power to ensure security for the family turns out to be the source for insecurity that resulted in Sunny and Mary's death... It's deep!
