other symptoms are : defocused attention, frequent headache, mental imagery (imagining pictures flashing and disappearing instantly, i.e. a picture of an extremely fat and big person and another one of an extremely thin and small person), hearing (imagining) his own name being called frequently, legs and hands are trembling since 3 years, and a noticeable body movement with each cardiac beat when the body is idle.

P.S. The person is a smoker since 2002.

Thank you for your answers.

Physically stressed to the limit, should definitely stop smoking. As for the mental imagery, that could be alot of things, but I'd say its just a case of a restless mind. perhaps this person has had alot of work he/she has had to do mentally. A stressful mind is a terrible thing, I would recommend vacation, something pleasant. if that doesn't work, than maybe his/her mind is trying to tell them something. The subconscience is a very tricky thing, next time that person "see's" that image, concentrate on it, focus on what they see. then try to figure out what kind of message the mind is trying to tell you. But above all dont see a psychiatrist, and if they do, dont take any mind medication. See a general practician and get the "cardiac beat" looked at first. Good luck

When you state that this person is a smoker it makes me wonder what they are smoking?

Excluding drug abuse it can safely be assumed that your friend is experiencing some altered mental status that appears consistant with psychosis. These are serious symptoms that justify an immediate physical and psychotic work up. An emergency room visit is certainly justified.

Expect denial. As a friend take charge and insist that they are seen immediately. There is virtually no chance that they are a threat to anyone else. There is a strong possibility that they are a danger to themselves.

The situation is not hopeless. Help and successful treatment are available.

This definitely constitutes a psychiatric emergency.

Good luck!

I don't agree with the other answers. They jump to conclusions just because you believe the same thing and you are leading us to the answer. But if this situation has been going on for 3 years, by now Schizophrenia would have been very clearly diagnosed. It is best to check for a neurological disorder before since delusional activity is scarce and physical symptoms are not. Smoking has nothing to do with this.

Good Lord, why has this person not been taken to a Doctor? I am not a Doctor or even a trained medical person but I would say he is presenting a lot of the symptoms of schizophrenia. Is it possible he has been taking drugs? Please don't wait any longer. Get him to a Doc. as soon as possible. He could be a danger to himself and others.

It really sounds like schizophrenia, unless the guy has been on drugs. Things like marijauna, cocaine, or meth can cause illusions like that, even if he's been off for years. If he has been off, that may explain the trembling. Did you say he has been trembling for the past 3 years or since he was 3? I would say either drugs or schizophrenia.

I think this person has a neural problem, not a psychological problems and needs to see a neurologist. The neurologist will give her/him a perscribtion that they should follow strictly.
After having done that, they should seek professional psychological help to help them deal with their stressors.
Its obvious that this person has been stressed to the limit and has his nerves thresholding all the time....i advice that you should seek help immediately. And no, i don't believe it's schizophrenia.
Good luck
