What happens when you use aol on your phone it will deduct or charge you for a text message so depending on your service provider the cost will vary.

Call your wireless provider. Only they can give you the answer on this one. Not sure what phone you have, but I have a Blackberry and some IMs send SMS messages and some use the web. I have seen messages go out to the IM server without me sending a message, so it is possible to get charged for just signing in. Plus signing in opens you up to recieve messages. I would not suggest it if you do not have unlimited data or messaging, depending on how your IM works. Better yet, get both. I love my SMS and data. :)

My understanding is it doesn't cost anything to sign on but its an SMS to actually send a message.

You will have to consult your Wireless Provider, Some of them consider it web access, some consider it SMS. Either way you want to make sure before you start using it too much.
