Because my grandmother lived with my family while I was growing up until she died, I speak Polish. I also married a man from Poland. I never learned to read and write the language, however; but, when I am in Poland I find I can sound out words I see on signs or in newspapers even though the alphabet is different. I suppose if I had the training it wouldn't be too difficult for me to pick it up. My husband, on the other hand, can speak and read English, but cannot write it. He cannot remember how to spell anything. He spells everything phonetically.

So in answer to you question, I have personally found it easier to SAY and READ foreign words than to SPELL them.

It reaaally depends on the language. Two examples

Spanish: it will be pretty much the same

Mandarin: It will be a looooot easier to say than to read or spell any word

For me, speaking Spanish is the hard part. I can read it easily and write it quite well. When I'm speaking to a Spanish-speaking person, I can understand fully what they are saying to me, but I have a hard time forming my sentence structure in the correct way to answer them back. It drives me crazy!! I've been in Spanish classes for four years and it still takes me an extraordinary amount of time to respond in the correct format! :o)
