Could a civilian, with no flying experience, land an airliner in, more or less, one piece ?

Further to above I would add, if they were receiving advice from air traffic controllers/other experts on the ground ?

Let me explain a little more. I went to see United 93 this evening and one thing that struck me (assuming the version of events portrayed is accurate) is that if the passengers on that flight had acted just a few minutes earlier they may have successfully regained control of the aircraft.

That done I wonder if it would then have been possible to land the aircraft, with all the assistance the authorities would no doubt have given them.

In no way do I wish to be facetious about such an horrific event. I apologise now to anyone who feels this is an inappropriate question to ask. Watching the movie has simply made me think about certain aspects of what happened that day in new ways.

Most modern airliners don't need the pilots to land these days, is mostly done with ILS and computers. Pilots are mostly there to take over if things go wrong. Without the computers however, a civillian with no training would likely wreck the plane unless being specific instructions from air control. I'd not trust that person though....

I remember seeing on the news about 10 years ago, that a light aircraft pilot had a heart attack whilst in the air and a small boy had to land the airplane with guidance from the air traffic controllers. So I think it would be possible for more then one adult to successfully land an airliner.

I landed a Britannia Airways Boeing 767 simulator with the pilot sitting along-side. I responded to the instructions and it was a good, soft landing with me doing all the stuff. The scary thing is, it feels soooo real! They are so life-like that the only thing the simulator can't do is make your ears go pop. I do a lot of flight simulators on my computer and have flown a real glider, but that was as real as it gets.

It could be done if you had two very patient people to help you. One would have to be to ground controller, the second would have to be a pilot, commercial or military, flying along side and letting you know you are doing the right things and giving you words of encouragement.

Not if it was me at the controls!!! I have seen those huge planes and have seen the pictures of the control panels...

I will stick to either walking or driving.. flying is for people who are smarter than I am, as I dont understand any of that, and it would be like putting an idiot in a plane and asking me to do the impossible...
