very curly hair and unable to wash it without help...

I have very think curly hair too. When I was a kid, I had the same problem. My mother used to use V05 hot oil on it about twice a month. Just get it warm, almost hot, rub it into your scalp really good. Let it set for about an hour to soak in. Wash it once or twice. Use a good conditioner and/or leave in conditioner. And don't use too much hair product such as hair spray, gel, mousse, etc. It may take a couple of months, but you'll see dramatic difference.

rub some olive oil onto scalp and leave for a while then wash out

It could be you have eczema or seborrhic dermatitis of the scalp.
I would see a Dermatologist.
