A player is judged to have commited a foul if he:
- kicks or attempts to kick a player
- trips or attempts to trip a player
- jumps at an opponent
- charges an opponent
- strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
- pushes an opponent
- tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball, making contact with the opponent before touching the ball
- holds an opponent
- spits at an opponent
- handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
- plays in a dangerous manner
- impedes the progress of an opponent
- prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands
The following fouls are specific for goalkeepers. So a goalkeeper is judged to have commited a foul if he:
- takes more than six seconds while controlling the ball with his hands before releasing it from his possession
- touches the ball again with his hands after it has been released from his possession and has not touched any other player
- touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kickked to him by a team-mate
- touches the ball with his hands after he has recieved it directly from a throw-in taken by a team-mate.
When the foul is one of the following:
- unsporting behaviour
- dissent by word or action
- infringment of the Laws of the Game
- delay of the start of play
- disrespect for the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick, free kick or throw in
- entering, reentering or deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee's permission
the player will be shown the yellow card by the referee.
A player will be sent off if he commits two fouls which earn him yellow cards, or if he commits a foul which gives him a direct red card.
The following fouls will earn the player a direct red card, which ejects the player from the game (and, depending on the decision of the federation ruling the game, for one or several subsequent matches):
- serious foul play
- violent conduct
- spitting
- denying the opposition a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
- denying the opposition a goal or an opponent moving towards the player's goal with an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately commiting a foul referred above
- using offensive, insulting or abusive language/gestures

If the player recieve a yellow card they will have a warning for the next game, if they recieve a yellow card in the next game they will miss the next game, if the player recieves a foul their opponent will have a free kick.

a foul is any action that impedes fair progress of the game, ball or player - referee's discretion often. If foul is severe enough a yellow caution card is shown, two yellows you are out of game
