◙ The very best virus scanners are free. Mcafee & Norton Antivirus are mostly hype and won't do as good as the free ones. -- About.com & Smart Computing Magazine

◙ Download and install AVG. Use it first and see if it finds any viruses or trojans.

◙ After running AVG go here and run this virus scanner online. There is no need to install it on your computer.

◙ Best spyware remover is Ad Aware. Download and install the free version.

◙ Here is a wealth of information about fighting spyware and spyware producers. Join their free forum for answers to your questions. -- Smart Computing Magazine

◙ Before downloading email attachments in Gmail and Yahoo Mail click on the link that says, "Scan With Norton Antivirus".

◙ Before downloading any software from the internet type it into http://groups.google.com/ to see if that title is known for spyware or viruses. Google Groups has over 1 billion posts spanning 25 years to help you. Even after checking it there ALWAYS scan it before opening it. You just can't be too careful. -- Smart Computing Magazine

◙ A lot of the download sites like http://www.download.com/ and http://www.tucows.com/ scan software before releasing it to the public. But just for safety sake you should still scan it yourself.

◙ If you have a broadband modem or network router the firewall in these is not as effective as a software firewall. The firewall that comes with Windows XP isn't very good either. Download ZoneAlarm and your system will be a lot safer. -- Smart Computing

Your friend is wrong. As long as you update the McAfee before you use it. If the virus definitions are in the program it will detect it.

Some Virus, Trojans and spyware are programed to stop you from installing these programs, and will also turn them off.

If you want to check for a virus, do an online scan and removal. The Malware can't stop the online scan. Go here and run the scan

Hello Lezgirl,

I'd recommend visiting http://www.antivirus.com/ or http://www.trendmicro.com/ as they have free online virus scanners that are always up to date.

If the virus has affected your system in terms of blocking the autopatcher feature which McAffee has in it, then installing it will only allow you to scan for viruses which were existant before the product hit the market. As new viruses come out every day, that probably won't help you.

There is a free antivirus program you can download for nothing, but since you are one of those people who discriminates on the grounds of sex and probably a lot of other things too,I just deleted the url from my clipboard.I suggest you just give up,throw your computer in the garbage bin and get off the internet.
People like you are not needed here and I do not like them,or any other kind of prejudiced bigot. Now go away before someone reports you for being offensive.

From one woman to another:

You could try running one or more of these free online
scans:

Trend:
http://housecall.antivirus.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

McAfee:
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

If offered an option to quarentine or delete, opt for
delete.
