It is virtually impossible to imagine any society without art of some kind. Indeed, the visual arts, music, drama, dance, and other forms or art, add a sense of pleasure to life. The arts are a vital part of civilization, an essential part of any culture. They are the universal languages through which human beings express their dreams, their aspirations, their ideas, and their feelings. They make it possible for all of us to communicate, understand, and appreciate each other. The arts have always been and always will be the language of civilization.

What is art?

The arts are a basic form of human communication. The visual arts, music, literature, and poetry may be considered the means by which people, past and present, express themselves in unique sights and sounds that capture the interest, imagination, and appreciation of others.

Arriving at a more specific definition for the visual arts may not sound too difficult at first-until you realize that the task has challenged scholars throughout history. Great philosophers, including the ancinet Greeks Plato and Aristotle, have attempted to define the nature of art and understant its unique contributions to human life. In theri efforts to define art, scholors have tried to establish the qualities that identify an object as a work of art. You may find that your own ideas about art take into account some of the same qualities noted by scholors:

Art should mirror reality. It must look like something seen in the real world.

Art must be pleasing to the eye, even if it is not realistic.

Art should express the artist's ideas, beliefs, and feelings so that others can understand them.

Perhaps you feel that all of these qualities are important, although they need not all be evident in the same work. After all, some works are successful because they do look real. Others do not mirror reality, but are still pleasing to the eye. Still others do not look lifelike and are not visually appealing, but succeed in communicating ideas or feelings. If you take into account all these qualities you can define VISUAL ARTS as:

Unique expressions of ideas, beliefs, experiences, and feelings presented in well-designed visual forms.

The purpose of art is to express our feelings in different ways for others to see. Art expands our minds to think about things that may not even be possible. Art brings out the true feelings of each and every person. This could mean how each person interprets works of art or how they actually create works of art. Art simply makes our lives more divine.

think about it. everything is art. look at your computer. look at your shirt. look at the sign outside. thats all art. you may not think so but I am a graphic design student so I have learned that art is everywhere. now to your question~ the purpose of art is to make things look appealing. if everything was just boring then what would this world come to? everything would just be black white and grey with no design or creativity. I think it helps people from going crazy!

art expresses feelings or beliefs...though in times before cameras and newspapers art (painting) was created to depict events. Even when an artist was trying to depict an event, though, they still added a twing of how they felt about it or their beliefs, which made the art an expression. Art represents the incapturable moods of us as humans.

Art is a way to express yourself or your feelings, for example when I'm in some sorta mood that I know I want to get rid of I either go to my piano, violin, cello, or I start to scribble something on a page or write some sort of poetry, and it really helps.

This may be the best question yet. There is no set purpose for it now, in the old days it acted as a camera. Now it's just crap I can do at home.
