Following a breakdown, Wilson descended into mental illness and drug abuse in the late Sixties and 1970s, taking less and less of a role in the Beach Boys. Withdrawing into himself, he spent long periods of time sleeping, taking drugs and overeating.

Like everyone else said, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys had depression and basically didn't leave his room for three years or so (maybe more, I'm not sure.) So the Barenaked Ladies are singing about being depressed I guess. Good song too.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys had a major depression in the 1970's and 1980's. He stayed in bed for a long time due to that depression and did not perform with the Beach Boys.

Brian Wilson was the leader of the Beach Boys. He suffered from mental illness for much of his career that made him OCD. He was also known to lay around in bed for great lengths of time out of depression.

Brian Wilson of the "Beach Boys" was addicted to drugs and he was so strung out he could barely get out of bed. He spent months before he was able to come around and rejoin the band.
