My husband is their only child, They have been with us since we were married. & she was extremely helpful in raising my three daughters.
They actually paid cash for the home which we have all lived in since then. Years ago the arrangement was and has been OK....Now he has acute allzeiheimers and is 87 and she is a totally self-sufficient 79 who is very extremely bitter about the 59 years of non-deserving loyalty
and endless care she is tirelessly bestowed upon him...
My husband is quite overwhelmed & regretfull about having brought me into this situation.
We would have quite a peaceful union otherwise.
Never done much on our own, because they brought him up thinking time away is a waste of money...They have come first in everything...
Please - I need to hear some opinions...

It sounds like time for your father-in-law to be placed in a long-term care facility (nursing home). If his alzeheimer's is really bad, they can care for him better than you and your family can at home.

This will give your mother-in-law a break also, but she'll probably still be bitter.

And you and your husband need some time alone. Maybe you could take a week or so vacation without the in-laws and children, and grandchildren, and get to know one another again.
