False. Scientists realize that radioactive decay happens at a steady rate which can be measured by radio-carbon dating. Through countless tests over many years, the consistent measurements so far have indicated that the Earth is about 4 billion years old.

Lets just say I wouldn't be surprised if someone proves the earth is only 7000 years old. I believe it is possible because it seems to be on some bigwigs agenda to make us not believe it, or in God, by going waaaaaay out of there way to come up with crazy theorys. I don't think anyone can know for sure but I like the idea for the same reason that I like Texans and Catholics more now. These things that are under attack and get bashed in this day and age, must be very threatening to the powerful forces that are screwing everything up. I would be interested in knowing what makes you think what you do. I'm not convinced that carbon dating is 100% trustworthy. It takes alot to convince me of anything and not being a science minded person that may never happen. Science has been wrong before.

Way older than that. Takes longer than that for oil to form much less some geological structures. You can measure and reasonably estimate wear and tear on rocks for example and come up with a whole lot more years than that. If they are off 20,000 years on a 200,000 year old estimate who cares. The fact is that rock did not erode like it did without many many years, more than 7,000 years.
Who in their right mind gets 7,000 years even from the Bible? The Bible itself is probably close to 5,000 years old if you consider the oral traditions that existed and were passed on long before Hebrew writing existed and the fact that the early stories in the Bible probably predate the existance of the Hebrew language.
Second think about Genisis. If you were to talk to a shepard from 2,000 BC. How would you explain complex processess such as the formation of the earth, seasons, gravity, etc? You'd have to put it in a parable within the context of their experience. Days would represent eons, events simplified into a way you could tell a person who had never been 10 miles from where they were born, who had almost no education at all and now written speach. You'd have to put it in a way they could understand.
Nor can dates be assumed to be very accurate from the oral histories. Those have a way of changing, it was not until written Hebrew that dates start firming up and becoming quite accurate. Unfortuneatly we really don't know where the oral histories occur and written Hebrew started. We don't know if any of the first testament was translated from predecessors of Hebrew. The tower of Babel to me seems like a very good example somehting was simplified to make it more understandable to a person from that time period. The equivalent would be for most of us trying to slap us with Quantem theory but not being able to possibly teach us all the physics that proceed truely understanding Quantem theory. However you can simplify the concepts and make it digestible to the layman without having to cover all the pre-requisite physics needed to understand Quantem theory. So the tower of Babel describes a culture which shatters at the failure of a great ambition. When they shatter they disperse and over the years slang turns a common language into dialects, which eventually evolve thorugh contact with other cultures and isolation from the core culture into seperate languages of their own. It was not a day covered in the tower of Babel but likely thousands of years, the story of the tower of Babel more a parable than a direct relation of events. So even the Bible really covers more than 7,000 years.

Well garayfive, it sounds like you already have decided what you believe, but I will pose a few thoughts that maybe you are interested in. God is omnipotent, and has the ability to do anything. Hence, He could create a earth and universe in an instant, no problem right? The question then becomes whether you believe that God intended to trick us into believing the age of the earth and universe as we do based on what we see around us, or actually did create the earth and universe over billions of years.
I respect your literalistic interpretation of biblical events, but would caution you against suppressing your critical thinking. God gave you a brain so you would use it to make decisions. If it is a decision of faith, i.e. something which can not be proved, use your faith. If it is a decision based on obvious evidence, I do not think God is trying to fool you. Light from the midnight sky has traveled across the universe for billions of years to get to you. Very easy to prove. The age of the earth is equally evident at a few billion years. None of these facts are in conflict with scripture in my opinion. It s not the physical world that God is concerned with, but the hearts of man. The path He created for man to access Him does not depend on 'proving' a literalistic interpretation. Trying to be 'right' in this issue will not lead you to life.

My answer is not based on belief. What if someone said they did not believe in Hurricane Katrina, that the video was faked. Would you say they were foolish for not seeing facts in front of them?
The fact is the earth is over 4 billion years old. The facts are there for you to find. The earth will continue to be 4 billion years old whether you "believe" or not.

If you beleive this to be true then you don't accept history and geology as fact but instead fiction. How do you explain the fact that there are human remains that have been carbon dated to be over 10,000 yrs old? How do you explain that there have been rocks found in the Aussie outback that are Millions of years old?
Would you like for me to keep going or do you have an answer for these sicentfic facts?
Your own theories and beliefs are your own and you should hold true to them but every theory can be proven wrong or right at some time. You just would have to accept or not accept it if and when that time comes for you.

True! I totally agree with you!
Because #1: the earth would be totally worn out if it were billions and billions years old! to acutally say the the earth is that old rediculous!
#2....evolution is NOT real and ppl r always trying to make excuses for it...it's a bunch of crap!
#3 - even tho the earth may look old, it's not. God can make anything old or young. Think about when he made Adam...he was not a little baby....he was a MAN!
#4 - REAL SCIENCE has proven that the type of dating the scientist use is NOT accurate. Scientists say the it takes millions of year for oil to be made in the earth...well it's proven that in a science lab, oil was made in 3 weeks!
Quit trying to make exuces for evolution and accept the truth 'cause y'all sound like a bunch of idiots!
Wow! I'm still reading the answers to this and I can't believe how stupid ppl are!

True - the age of the earth is actually very young as evidenced by the only valid methods of dating such as Radiocarbon and tree rings.
Additionally, the electromagnetic field is decaying at a rate consistent with a young earth.
Also do the math for the population of the earth if the age was in the billions. You can see that it is young. Other things like the presence of helium still escaping from the rocks and the amount of salt in the ocean are all consistent with a young earth.

False. The generally accepted age for the Earth and the rest of the solar system is about 4.55 billion years (plus or minus about 1%).
Unfortunately, the age cannot be computed directly from material that is solely from the Earth. There is evidence that energy from the Earth's accumulation caused the surface to be molten. Further, the processes of erosion and crustal recycling have apparently destroyed all of the earliest surface.
The oldest rocks which have been found so far (on the Earth) date to about 3.8 to 3.9 billion years ago (by several radiometric dating methods). Some of these rocks are sedimentary, and include minerals which are themselves as old as 4.1 to 4.2 billion years. Rocks of this age are relatively rare, however rocks that are at least 3.5 billion years in age have been found on North America, Greenland, Australia, Africa, and Asia.

Um geological facts point to the earth being formed somewhere around 5 billion years ago. If the question your asking is if civilization has been around for 7,000 years thats different. Depending on what religion you follow your answer could be true, but most likely civilization in its most rudimentry term probably emerged around 10,000 B.C.
