How come until book 6, was Snape denied the "Defense against the Dark Arts" job? Was Dumbledore afraid something bad would happen if he gave Snape the DADA job? and what made Dumbledore finally give Snape the job in Book 6

Dumbledore never let Snape closer to the dark arts than he had to, fearing it might bring about a relapse into his "old ways".

Ever since Dumbledore denied Voldemort the position of DADA teacher Hogwarts has been unable to keep a teacher in that position for more than a year.

It's not speculation that Snape has wanted the job for years. It's mentioned quite a few times throughout the book, and Snape himself talks about it in HBP. There's a few things to consider here: First, a new DADA teacher was needed for book 6. Second, Slughorn was the old potions master. Perhaps Dumbledore, in searching for a teacher to accept a position, couldn't find anyone interested in teaching DADA, but as Slughorn was willing to resume teaching potions and Dumbledore had someone knowledgeable in the dark arts already (Snape), he decided to finally allow Snape to assume the role of DADA teacher. Another thing that's important: Dumbledore KNOWS the position is "cursed". Dumbledore also knows that Voldemort has ordered Draco to kill him, and has already arranged with Snape to step in. Obviously Dumbledore knew Snape would not be able to continue teaching once he killed the headmaster, so Snape wouldn't be able to remain at Hogwarts.....so what's the harm in putting him in the position that's "cursed" so that no teacher lasts more than a year, since Snape's leaving at the end of the year anyway.

Here's the full story : Dumbledore is not dead! He and Snape jus planned it to like like he was dead! Dumbledore gave Snape the job coz nobody lasts more than 1 year in that job and it was part of the plan for Snape to run away in the end. Besides, Slughorn taught potions and not DADA and thats why Snape was the most appropriate choice!

Its a long story so i wont tell it here....you can go to www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com if you want proof.

I think he finally gave him the job to make Voldemort think he fully trusted Snape and therefore Snape would be able to obtain more information about what Voldemort is up to, don't forget he is technically still living just in the picture. I also think that maybe Snape killed Dumbledore to put him out of his misery not to just kill him. I think to much time had elapsed to repair whatever damage had been done by the liquid that was covering the heart pendant. If you re-read the words Dumbledore actually is begging Snape to end it for him in the book. He says Please Servius right before Snape kills him.

The reason he was denied the dada job was because, dumbledore did not fully trust snape, also, dumbledore was afraid that if snape got the job, then it would cause a relapse in his interests in the dark arts. he finally got the job because dumbledore finally trusted snape enough. (big mistake on dumbledore's part seeing as how snape killed him)hope this helped.

As far a Dumbledore trusting Snape, I believe he trusted him implicitly. Otherwise he would never have been included as a member of the Order of the Phoenix. I feel that Half Blood Prince revealed that potions were Snape's true strength and that is why he taught that class for so many years. In the end, he was chosen as the DADA instructor because of his experience and the desperation of the times. Also, I'm convinced his previous time spent as a death eater was in the role of spy...that is how he became so good at occlumency. What he did at the end of HBP was unavoidable because of the unbreakable vow.

Dumbledore gave the job to Snape for two reasons.

No one applied for it, by giving it to Snape it kept the MOM out of Hogwarts.

It made Snape look like Dumbledore trusted him completely.

Dumbledore didn't give him the job at first because he thought that it might spark the "old ways" in Snape's mind. But he finally gave him the job because he thought that he could trust him. Snape helped him with his "dead" hand, so he gave him the job. But, that's what I think. The 7th book is supposed to clear everything out.

Snape got the job in book 6 because he had to seem trusted by Dubledore so that what happened in book 6 could happen. The reason snape didnt have the DADA position prior is because he didnt want it. It is rummored by everyone else that he was pining for the job.

i'm not sure.. but i can say that i definitely don't agree with the others who say that dumbledore didn't trust snape fully.. if anything dumbledore assured us in all the previous books that he DOES trust Snape..

I agree with one of the comments above though.. that says that it was to appear as if Dumbledore FULLY trusted Snape so that what happened could have happened...

But yea..we're going to have to wait for the next book =x
