I think you have made a massive assumption that the greatest moment in sport would be an Amercan achievement...and even worse, you've narrowed it down to an American sport!

What about Bjorn Borg's reign of wins at wimbledon, for example.

The first thing that popped into my head when reading the details of your question was the Boston Red Sox' improbable comback from 3 down in the 2004 ALCS. Gives me chills just thinking about it.
