circumcision is an ancient ritual where the excessive skin on the penis is surgically removed. In some religions such as Judaism, it is a sign of covenant with G-d. Many people have strong opinions against it.

Dear Rocky,

Most parents have this done because they are told it should be done. It involves surgical removal of the "foreskin" on a male's penis. The foreskin is a loose moveable area of skin that lets the penis head become uncovered when erection happens. Then, as the erection subsides, the foreskin once again covers the very sensitive head.

Very few parents actually research circumcision or take time to think it through, and most are not really ready to talk to each other frankly about penises.

And a lot of parents are afraid of doing something "wrong" to their children. Parenting is seen as a very complex thing that average people are not equipped to do.

Consequently, everybody listens to doctors, columnists, advisors etc ... as though they (the parents) don't know anything.

You are fortunate if you have an uncircumcised penis. The foreskin is a simple and usually dependable body part that works very well.

Nature put the foreskin there to protect the sensitive head. This protection keeps the head sensitive so that sex is very pleasurable.

The foreskin also prevents anything from touching the head and arousing you unintentionally. This can be especially good when one is young and easily aroused, but also has homework to do.

The foreskin is a brilliant piece of engineering by nature.

Hope this helps.

Circumsision is all about removing someone's foreskin before they have the chance to tell you "No way!". It used to be considered "cleaner" and now it's considered genital mutilation.
Your little boy will touch it to find out what his foreskin is all about, but if that doesn't gross you out (a diaper does wonders to stop it) leave it alone. Let him decide if he wants it or not.
