I love Robert Frost's famous quote about his own life, a quote that he wrote about while imagining his impending death, and a quote that is now on his headstone.
"I had a lover's quarrel with the world."
Something about that quote says so much to me about life in so few words. Which is why, one supposes, he was able to garner four Pulitzer Prizes. In those few words you can see his relationship with the world, with everything in his life. He so loved life, and yet was so often torn apart by it, such as when he could not convince his own son not to kill himself. Yet in his poetry and his life, there is such love that none can doubt it. And in the end, despite the quarrel, which is something less than a fight anyway, the world is his lover. I just think it's an amazing quote that probably sums up how so many of us feel about the experience of living, both loving and struggling at once.
