Will be staying for a week in St. John's and would like some ideas on day trips etc...

I think that you should travel outside of St. John's. St. John's was my least favorite part of the rock. I think you should rent a car and drive around. There are lots of historical sites.
I stated for about 3 months in the Bonavista area- there's lots to do, especially if you are an outdoorsy type. I personally enjoyed taking a tour of the mine on Bell Island, Cape spear, and some of the provincial parks. Check out:

Well, actually, outside of St.Johns or Mt.pearl, there isn't a whole lot to do.
Whale watching or getting a guide to take you and do some lobster catching is great.
