Too funny this question is up here right now. My co-workers and I literally just walked in from doing this. We picked up 6 2-liters and 6 20oz along with 2 2-liters of generic diet cola and a slew of Mentos.
Our results:
3 Mentos + 1 20oz Diet Coke = 5-6 feet
- Emptied more than 3/4 of the bottle
8 Mentos + 1 2-liter Diet Coke = 15-20 feet
- Emptied 2/3 of the bottle
8 Mentos + 1 2-liter generic Diet Cola = 6-8 feet
- Emptied 1/2 of the bottle
There were too many people around to try today, but next week we will be attempting to match those fellows who managed to turn the 2 liters into rockets with Mentos!!!!!!
Awesome, fun, harmless and yes I was getting paid for doing it today!!!!

sugar (from the Mentos) placed in a diet Coke ( or most soft drinks) will releases heat ( from dissolving i think) causing a lot of fizzing or bubbling.
I did this with something - not a Mentos- a long time ago. It was great, and made a real mess.

Saved it off. Planning on trying it sometime in next couple weeks. Just don't have either ingredient sitting around right now. Also wondering if 2 packs of mentos will increase the height of the fountain :)

It tried it actually with Pepsi and RC. Pepsi works better. I put about 6 of em in a 2 liter Pepsi bottle and it spewed way up high. (The things ya do for a cheap thrill!)

not yet, I almost did last week but someone decided to open the bottle of Diet Coke grrr. I hope to do it this weekend. I have seen so many videos on it, it looks awesome.
