It all depends on how many you need. Each phone line requires a cable pair. Most residences have two-pairs run to the house. If more is needed, the phone company will have to run more cable from their cable block to your demarc point (the box that sits outside of your house).

Often times, of more cable pairs are needed, instead of running a single pair or a couple pair, they'll run a 25-pair cable. It's overkill, but that would mean that if any additional services are needed, they don't have to run new wire. All that's required is wiring work at either end.

And I learned that if the home was wired for "princess" phones in the 50's-60's-- there are extra wires-- so one of that type will yield two numbers/ phones-- for one.
But generally, you can have as many phones as you're willing to pay for.
