and at what age is it best to do this?

When they are ready - there is no point to trying to wean and having a grumpy child.

I've heard of a number of ways. Cutting off the nipple and then giving it back to your child so that they see that it's "broken" and then throw it away themselves is a good idea. I have one friend who mailed the pacifier away so the child could see it leaving the house. My neighbor took it away from her son cold turkey, just said it's gone and he cried for a couple days and then got over it.

My year old twins still have theirs. We don't give it to them during the day except for naps & bedtime (except right now when they are sick). Around 2 years old we're going to try cutting off the nipple and seeing what they do. We want them to understand why it's gone, not just that it's gone.

Get rid of it when you & your baby are ready. There is no "right time", it's when it works for you. I'm sure you are a great parent, since you are curious about stuff like this - and you will do right by your baby.

I'd say the best age to wean from a pacifier is around 10 months. Start by weaning during the day for a few weeks then gradually stop at nighttime over a period of a month. Like every other day then every two days, every three then nothing. having a routine would help too. Bath,Book,Bed is the best rule.

There is nothing worse than seeing a child who can walk around, sucking on a pacifier, or worse, sucking back on a bottle at 3 years old.

However, the point is not about what I or the rest of society thinks, it's about the child. So I would say when you start giving baby a sippy cup to drink from, that's when you take away the soother.

I had a friend of mine take the pacifier away from both of her sons when they turned 1. They fussed for a few nights, but were fine after that. I think you just have to take it away and don't give in. I also don't think it's a good idea to let any baby past 1 have a pacifier. There are plenty of other ways to sooth your toddler at that age.

About age 2 would be a good age. I have read to cut a tiny bit off the pacifier every day until it is gone.
None of my kids used a pacifier; it is hard to throw away a thumb.

At age 8 -12 months simply get rid of it. Cold turkey. Dn't look back. You might want to try to discover when your child usually required it and if it was really a need or soother. Find other means of amusing your child to distract him/her from pacifer withdrawal symptoms. Act like it had never been invented.

I know you should take them away when they are little, but I waited until my son was 3. Then on his third birthday he cut the nipples off of them because he was a big boy. It worked really well and he never had a problem without them.

Only one of my daughters used one, she left it for Santa on her 2nd birthday (also xmas day) to take to another baby, she cried for a couple of nights but then she was fine.

Let him/her have it until about age 3 ... then start telling him/her that his/her friends will laugh.

My baby still has his ... he is almost 18 months.
