I had a similar experience, somebody once swung a baseball bat at me, hit me on the head and was apparently covered in blood - didn't feel a thing though! when I put my hand to the wound I started balling it though (realised I was bleeding profusely) :P So yeah adrenaline and all that, cool.

Adrenaline blocks off the pain receptors to enable you to perform to some extent during an emergency. Such as the fight or flight syndrome. This blocking of the pain gives one just enough time to go for help or enable the injured to at least try to make a survival or rescue attempt. Otherwise, the pain would be so debilitating that we could no longer fend for ourselves to give us an increased chance of survival.

It's a hormone which helps to kill pain. Your body also releases endorphins which numb pain too. These hormones target both your brain and pain receptors in the nerves so you don't feel it. They are basically our natural painkillers which have been necessary for our survival as we have evolved from cavemen - no drugs in those days!
