right around the same time ppl are putting their bikes away for the winter is the best time to get one. i'm thinking about getting one this year, so i dont have to ride my uncle's anymore. lol.
around the end of october is when the sales usually start to happen. they need to get rid of all of last years models to make room for the next years stock, so they're usually ready to cut a deal. less bikes sell in the winter, so they're more prone to drop the price to make a sale.

New? Buy in the late fall when dealers are scratching to make quote.
But why buy new? Motorcycles are one of those things that people buy for weird, ego-related reasons, then ride for 50 miles, then put in the garage for a year, then sell. You can buy any *brand new motorcycle* for 60% off if you look for it. If you buy used then buy in January when spring fantasies are a long way off and Christmas bills are due...

at the end of the riding season. and when the brand new models have been announced. these two factors find dealers with stock that they want to move but poeple always want the latest greatest and it is a slow time. you can often find a 1-4 yr old, new bike online or at a large dealer (they can access left over product from manufacturer's stock on hand). These bikes are often for sale quite a bit lower than you could get a used one of the same make and model and you get a full warranty!

usually the fall or early winter is a good time to buy motorcycles as most people wont be riding them or even interested in them till spring. but be patient and deals come along esecially with motorcycles as people become disinterested in them and need to sell them.

If you're in no hurry, visit your local dealers and decide on which type of bike and how much you're willing to pay. Leave the information with a salesman, and wait until they call YOU. Sometimes they'll take a bike in trade only because they know that they may have a buyer for it already.

Die hard Harley riders will tell you that the only time and the only reason that they will sell their bikes for less than their worth is at Christmas time, and only IF they are suffering for money to buy gifts for their kids or wife.
It's sad that it has to come down to that, but 'bless their hearts' for putting their bike secondary on the list at Christmas. lol

Best time is end of the year because dealerships are pressured into getting old car models out of their lot to receive new shipments.

David and Raesy have it above.
Why buy new, and if you are going to go HD (I dunno, some people actually LIKE paying mechanics) wait until Christmas. If you want a dependable machine rather than a trailer queen, wait until late-fall, winter when it starts getting chilly. Honey will start nagging wannabe to get rid of "that thing - you never ride it anyway." You can get some great deals.

I would imagine that winter would be a good time to buy, when the demand is less.
