Good point about 'liberate them from the Germans just so we could be their dictators'. Harrysfuture and a few other need to think about that concept a bit more. If someone saved me from drowning, then asked me to murder someone, I wouldn't be obligated to help them.
The French got a bad rap because a few war hungry Americans decided to run a smear campaign. They figured since they couldn't bully France into a war, they would shame them. Call into question their loyalty and state that they 'owe' us and we could get Americans to believe that we're entitled to unquestioned allegiance. Start talking about what a group of pusses the French are and we get our collective testosterone pumping. We look like the tough guys who are going to save the world again. Make them look bad so that we can look better.

France got such a bad rap from not sending troops to Iraq as they were the most vocal opponents of it and tried, unsuccessfully, to pass a UN resolution preventing the invasion, suggesting instead that more dialog take place between the UN and Saddam in an effort to find a peaceful solution.
Podaleiros - FYI, France was liberated by US, UK, and Canadian troops after the Normandy Landings. Russia was on the Eastern Front i.e. the other side of Germany.

The only thing that France owes us is their friendship.(Which we had at one time).
The problem isn't that they weren't with us...It's because they went out of their way to be against us.
They have forgotten that they are free because someone (America), thought enough of them to save them from the Nazis...Yet they won't help to ease others suffering & pain at the hands of a dictator.
When a gift is given you such as your very life and your countrys freedom than you owe it to someone else if you can help because it is the only way that you can Ever repay the debt...(Not all debts are repaid in money).
Aside from this though the problem was that they purposefully went behind our backs and tried to get other countries to go against us. This is not a true friend whom would do this to you, STAB YOU IN THE BACK that way.
My daughter attended a Christian summer camp and did become friends with a french girl.
She told my daughter that the French hate Americans. (Everyone knows that they think that they are better then us!)
The funny thing was that this very girl's sister attends a large Christian college here in the U.S.
So I guess they only like us when it suits them!
By the way...after camp this girl never answered any of my daughters emails even though they got along great while they were at camp together.

FYI, Russians only got as far as Berlin, NOT Paris. US liberated France August 25, 1944 In modern history, France has always relied on the US to protect her. They were even trading with Iraq after the embargo. They're French, go figure.

Our administration beleived that they would be our butt boys. The rest of europe mostly went along with our tainted logic when W decided we needed to attack a stable country that had nothing to do with terrorism.
I know some french people and they are peace loving and didn't beleive W's bull. Frankly I agree with them.
They got all the bad publicity cuz her karl Rove and the Reps have the best propaganda machine since Hitler in the 30s.

Probably because as soon as talk about war was just beginning France was squarely in the U.S corner but as time wore on they began distancing themselves. And FYI Russia didn't free France as Russia was too busy trying to get Germany out of Moscow and Leningrad.

The French went out of their way to get in ours. At first, it was unclear why they put up such a fuss, but the reason, or at least one of them, became clear after we went in.
Remember the UN Oil-for-Food program, and how corrupt it was? Well, as it turns out, instead of buying food for his people like he was supposed to with that money, Saddam was buying weapons. Guess who was selling them? You got it - the French. It's funny how the "SENSIBLE" world doesn't want to talk about that...

It is a longstanding tradition for english speaking countries evenwhere in the world to make fun of the french by calling them war-fearing sex maniacs. It's been going on for over 600 years.

FYI, it wasn't the US that liberated France, it was Russia. And they get bad rap (which they don't really, it's just that the Cons yell LOUDLY when a country doesn't agree with Chimp) because they're firm and outspoken.

Mainly because the French have created this "yellow" image of themselves ever since caving to the Nazi's after the fall of the Maginot Line in WWII.....simple, but true all the same.
