My son's pants are doing that too, especially ones from Old Navy. It has something to do with the abrasion that is being done to the jeans to give them that weathered look.

He tried to wear a pair that already had a small rip, with shorts under just in case, and it tore clear down his leg. If he buys at Old Navy, it is with his own money from now on.
If I caught it in time, I think I would have looked at a fabric store for an iron-on patch to put inside to reinforce that weak area.

mine do that too. Do you cary a wallet? The weight isn't helpful. Try to look for pants that don't have a patch pocket but have a contained pocket inside the pants. Less stress on the fabric that way.
I also lost a lot of belt loops, but then I realized I was pulling my pants on using the loops. Do you put your hands in your back pockets a lot? I realized it was a subconscious action that was wearing out my jeans.

You might be sitting too much? Mine always wear out at the knees first because I clean houses and spend a lot of time on my knees scrubbing $hit. It could also be your butt isn't big enough and the jeans are rubbing on themselves when you sit down....try some snug-fit jeans instead...

They do this because every time you sit down, you stress the stitching that holds the pocket on your pants. That, in turn, stresses the fabric the pocket is stitched to.

Mine do it too, and sometimes I don't notice it right away. My daughter has to tell me that she can see my butt!
