Can someone please explain to me why the world functions so that good people who help others at the expense of themselves are then repaid by being treated like crap by the very people they help? When did the world become so "me" orientated that people stop caring about others?

You are all right in saying that is even worse when it is by someone you care about and when it is family and in my situation it is family.

Almost all of us appreciate what we have to work for or purchase with our own money more than what is given to us. Ingrattitude is part of the human condition. That's part of the reason why you can get treated like crap by the very people you help. Another part would have to do with human dignity. When a person receives help from someone else, he might consider it as a measure of his own worth, and consider it in a negative sense. To shield himself from these negative conclusions, he denigrates the person who helps him. This sort of thing happens all the time.

When a person is a victim they are frequently showered with attention and help. It need happen only two or three times and these same people become professional victims.

Frankly you need look no further than New Orleans to see exactly what I am talking about, FEMA funds being used to buy porn, football tickets and who knows what else. People protesting because the government hadn't cleaned their homes yet. Give me a break!!!

Once one has achieved professional status, being helped becomes the norm, it is expected. If the help is withheld for any reason it becomes the fault of the one giving/withholding the aid. Since a professional victim has no responsibility for their own demise, the fault must lie elsewhere. And if the fault lies elsewhere the victim has a RIGHT to receive charity/aid etc.

And never forget, "no good deed goes unpunished".

People are only that way because we allow them to be. Let me explain a person will only treat you how you allow them to treat you. Then again we do have stupid people who believe they deserve everything not caring about anything else but themselves. i also believe it has a lot to do with somebody's lifestyle and family.

I agree. I've been there many times. I don't understand it either. Especially when it involves family members. That's even worse.
