During World War II Western North Africa was under the control of Vichy France. I've read that they "fiercely" resisted Americans during operation Torch. Why wouldn't they just surrender, especially to a force which could liberate France from Germany?

The North African French were under German control, they were forced by the Germans to fight the Americans. Many of them did actually surrender. I suppose however they didnt want the war coming to their part of the world..*shrugs*. All i know is that the Vichy French government were Nazi sympathisers, they hated the Allies..probably why they fought the Americans :P

Vichy France was aligned with the Nazis, and those French who collaborated with Hitler knew that it would be very bad for them if France was liberated, so they fought against the Americans fiercely in an attempt to save their own hides.

The situation was very confused, many formations put up a stiff resistance, while others did surrender or actively joined the allies. It depended most on who commanded them.
