Ummm ... buy a genuine copy of Windows?

The reason for that message is because the GVP has been installed on your computer. It phones home every day and lets Microsoft know you are still using an illegal copy of Windows. They now know who you are.

If you purchased the computer with the program already loaded and didn't get the disk, you need to contact Microsoft. With proof of purchase and other info, they will send you a valid copy free.

If you downloaded an illegal copy and think you can just remove the popups and you'll be safe, THINK AGAIN. Microsoft has made it very clear, over the last few months, that they are going after the people using illegal copies of Windows.

A member of one of the Veterans groups I'm in, was served with a lawsuit 3 weeks ago. A Sheriff's Deputy, 2 lawyers, and a technician went into his home, erased everything off his computer, data and all. He has the option of settling for a little over $23,000 or they will go to court and also press criminal charge.

Enjoy the misery your in for.

In theory you cant. However if you are using the same computer but with a different hard drive which needed replacing then yes you can. Click on the activate windows tab and follow the instructions for phone activation. The whole process is a pain in the a**e but they will give you a code which will replace the old one. However if the computer is not the one which originally had the software ie its pirated - forget it. Cheap legal versions of xp can be got on eBay. They are oem (original equipment manufactured) and are designed to be used on a new pc when first bought. However they work and can be legally activated for less than £50.
Good luck

dont listen to any of the above,ok you have been one of the unlucky ones to find you have a copied windows xp
dont worry
firstly lets get rid of the notifications that appear at boot up and on your desktop....first go to the non genuine icon on your taskbar(it looks like a silver snowflake),then right click and click on change notification settings, you will then be directed to the genuine windows website at microsoft, you then have the option to disable the notifications(you will be given a warning that you wont get any updates(although you will get security updates as i did the other day)and you have to agree to this
the only updates you wont get are programs such as windows defender and the new media player 11 but these are not essential
now when you restart your computer you wont see the notification window allthough you will still have the icon in your taskbar but it will now inform you that "your computer is at risk"
with reference to getting a genuine copy you can get a new license on-line,but as this costs nearlly the same as a new copy(boxed),you would be better buying one
i only found out that my xp was non-genuine when i received the genuine advantage update about a month ago and i got the shock you had
to be honest ,apart from a couple of applications you cant use, theres not much difference, allthough the new media player is brilliant(my wife has it on her p.c and she cant help letting me know the fact)

You have a pirated copy of Windows. The only way to get rid of the warning messages is to buy a legal copy of Windows.

there is a little program that your computer may have downloaded automatically from microsoft that is called something like "windows verification tool" - it has got its knickers in a twist over some bit of MS software that it thinks you don't have a legit copy of.

if you care, buy a legit cop

if you don't, or you think it's wrong, uninstall the windows verification tool - I'm guessing you'd do this with start menu -> control panel -> add/remove programs

You might have some MS program that came from some bulk license agreement and isn't legit outside of that license, or the software might just be confused. Or you might be robbing Mr Gates. Villain! Quick, men, get him!

I had this problem, if you're running windows xp go into all programs from your start menu, select accessories, select system tools, select system restore. You now need to pick a date on the calendar before you recieved the update telling you you had a non genuine copy of windows, follow the instructions and it'll reboot your system.
The problem should be fixed, just be careful not to reinstall the offending update.
Hope it helps!
