I'm beginning to see that it may be this, and I just want to know if I am going to have to shell out big bucks for a new fuel pump, or if I can just live with this issue that causes rough idle.

all the check valve does is hold pressure in the fuel lines, it should not cause a rough idle, just prolonged starting. I would check the fuel pressure to see if it is in spec. then go from there. It may be a pump or a pressure regulator or injector issues

Sounds like you are on the right track to me. That valve on fuel rail you mentioned is a test valve it is there to allow you to test fuel pressure i'd suggest either fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator. only real test i know is to have buddy turn on key and as soon as the pump starts going press valve in should spray fuel everywhere so be careful average fuel pressure for fuel injection is 45psi. if you just get a dribble it could still be either or but if you get good spray you know they are both ok. Then you should start checking on those sensors, many of them can be tested with a repair manual and multi-meter that has ohm function. Contrary to your belief fuel pumps do sometimes fail slowly, and so do FPRs. Low fuel pressure can cause syptoms you describe. Good Luck.
