It was discovered some time ago that eating in our society is similar to smoking, while the addiction to nicotine will be over in three days it will take much longer than that to break the habit of smoking. Eating (overeating) follows a similar process. It is likely that you have trained yourself to eat on certain clues for instance if the kids are misbehaving instead of lashing out you could eat, or if you run into financial stress you relive your pain by eating etc. Analyze the patterns and try to break the habit, remember that the best way to get rid of an undesired habit is to acquire a new desired habit, and that it takes 18 days to break a habit. If you can go for 18 days without falling prey of your habit you will have the upper hand.

Humans can be trained to crave food in response to abstract prompts just like Pavlov's dogs, reveals new research.

But whereas Pavlov's dogs were conditioned to drool at the sound of a bell, Jay Gottfried and colleagues at University College London, UK, trained humans to yearn for vanilla ice cream and peanut butter at the sight of fractal-based computer images.

Just put the eating time toward something else like playing games with the kids or walking the dog. And also get rid of the candy dishes and snack foods at work and home!

thats a good question, Don't stop the eating at least not as a crash. Instead transition to healthy food apples, oranges, grapefruit and the like. Then maybe slow down the eating.

When you start doing something for yourself and not the kids or work you will find it easy to shed poundage. Until then I'm afraid it's a battle of willpower.
