What is Tourette Syndrome (TS)? It is a neurobiological disorder characterized by tics–involuntary, rapid, sudden movements and/or vocal outbursts that occur repeatedly.
What are the most common symptoms? Symptoms change periodically in number, frequency, type and severity–even disappearing for weeks or months at a time. Commonly, motor tics may be eye blinking, head jerking, shoulder shrugging and facial grimacing. Vocally: throat clearing, sniffing and tongue
clicking.
What is the cause of the syndrome? No definite cause has yet been established, but considerable evidence points to abnormal metabolism of at least one brain chemical called dopamine.
How many people are affected? As TS often goes undiagnosed, no exact figure can be given. But authoritative estimates indicate that some 200,000 in the United States are known to have the disorder. All races and ethnic groups are affected.

The mental disorder most often associated with shouting obscenities is Tourette's syndrome. Tourette's is one of many tic disorders currently diagnosed. It is characterized by the presence of multiple motor tics as well as at least one phonic tic.
Although patients with Tourette's occasionally report associated tics of shouting obscenities, more often phonic tics are unintelligible shouts, noises, or squeals, but could include any combination of words from a persons vocabulary.
The onset of Tourette's is generally young, at 6 or 7 years old, but may occur as late as 18 to 20. Preceding the tics, patients report feeling a seemingly irresistable urge to act out the tic. Once acted out, the anxiety associated with the urge is relieved. A similar example of this process of urge relief is a common itch and the relief associated with scratching the itch.

Tourette's Syndrome. Actually the vocal tic is just one of many symptoms... usually the syndrome is characterized by physical spasms and uncontrolable tics of all sorts.
