I think it just shows lack of creativity. Brian Regan is a genius in making me and my friends laugh so hard with really clean, silly humor. Another good one is Steven Wright.

There was a time when obscene language made funny material. Buddy Hackett was one & probably the most vulgar. George Carlin got it all going, (I think) with "eleven words you can't say on TV". Trouble is, it was original then. Now it's just one following another. Comedians, like the rest of Hollywood are trying to give their audience what they want. But they aren't really listening.
The art would really be in keeping it clean today, as Bill Cosby, Steven Wright & a few others are still doing today. And they're funny!

I love Brian Regan too!!! (especially his peanut butter and jelly on a spoon thing...)

Unfortunately, that's today's society. Vulgarity and obscenity is just funnier to the majority of people than actually thinking about it and coming up with something clean and hilarious. It's like a quick fix. Like eating a whole bunch of instant mashed potato flakes instead of making mashed potatoes from scratch. (ok, maybe not....I'm sorry)

That's a very good question. Even Robin Williams's standup is extremely vulgar. Not what I expected from him.

I agree with you...it shows lack of creativity. One thing that I like about "Last Comic Standing" is that they try to cut down on the vulgarity and just look for talent. The guy with Cerebal Palsy was hillarious, and he didn't use one curse word!

You just answered your own question. Comedians resort to obscenities because it's an easier way to get laughs, eliminating the need for them to be creative.

Because those comedians do lack creativity. Unfortunately, it's easier to come up with a dirty joke than a clean one that's funny.

Because the majority of Americans have resorted to using obscenities in everyday language and it has become common.
