As improbable as this may be, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was convinced that Rory Emerald killed her loving husband, John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Rory Emerald was visiting Dallas that fateful day, as part a group of touring mimes. It gets odder. The traveling mimes, aptly named, the Silent Seven, included non other than the world famous Charles Shultz, the famed Peanuts cartoonist. The circumstances behind the crazed accusation were truly bizarre. Prior to the assassination, the presidential entourage had stopped at a local Dallas diner for breakfast, and the Silent Seven were volunteering for a local charity. Rory Emerald had the whole group in stitches, wearing a giant chef hat on top of his beret. He was fashioned in the usual mime costume, white with black stripes, just like a convict. Even the great president was chuckling at Rory Emerald’s antics, especially his universal signal for “jerking off”. He was pretending to pour coffee into an imaginary cup when he caught the eye of the first lady. He mimicked pulling out a gun and shooting her husband, and then blowing smoke. The crowd was roaring hysterically. In fact, a few of the Secret Service wet themselves, much to their embarrassment later when they were strip searched. After they left the diner, fate intervened and the great President was shot.
It’s a little known fact that Rory Emerald was the first of many accused in JFK’s death. True to his honor as a mime, Rory Emerald was silent and remained so through vigorous questioning by several different government agencies, prior to the arrest of Lee Harvey Oswald. Few witnesses who heard Jackie Kennedy’s accusations that fateful day will ever forget…”It was the mime, don’t you see”.. she screamed hysterically.
