I don't know if they're just annoying the plants or what because I haven't seen any damage as of yet. They are shaped like a housefly, but about a half to a third the size and they are a beautiful green color. How do I get rid of them? *Should* I get rid of them? And they only seem to hang certain plants. They *love* my new little Catalpa tree - it's about a foot high. And they're hanging around the Clethra (Summersweet).

Don't jump the gun and kill them just yet! They could be harmless, even beneficial. Check this link and see if this is the insect that you have seen in your yard.

I do not know anything about flys, but I do know about catalpa trees. When you see worms eating the leaves, don't panic. They will sometimes strip a tree of leaves, but the tree recovers in a couple of weeks.

The worms are a fisherman's dream! If you fish with catalpa worms, you do not even need a hook. Just dangle a worm over the water, and catfish will jump in the boat with you! Don't fish? Sell the worms to someone who does!
