I've noticed the same thing. It's like they have a lot of pent-up energy alllll the time and have to pace. They can never sit still, either. If a "pacer" is sitting, they seem to have to bounce a leg, too, or otherwise fidget. It can be a little disconcerting (even slightly annoying) to those of us non-pacers, but I've begun to develop a tolerance, for some reason.

Why do people walk when the smoke, or chew gum? Because most of us are able to do 2 things at the same time.

why not? I guess it gives us something to do while talking. And, I tend to get things done while talking on the phone (multi-tasking).

most people get bored if they stay in the same spot so pacing or walking occupies their brain with another task.
