If I'm not mistaken, I believe it had to do with an experiment of fixing the holes in the ozone layer. Aluminum oxide in the upper atmosphere, in mist form, stays in the upper atmosphere and helps with extra protection from solar and cosmic radiation. I don't know if they found the project to be successful, however?

I think you mean sprayed on aircraft. But anyways, aluminum oxide is responsible for metallic aluminum's resistance to weathering. So, obviously, they sprayed it on the aircraft to prevent it from weathering, or that's what I would assume.
