SanDisk makes some decent players for under $80 (after rebate - so this may be a problem). See first link for details. Unfortunately, the $40 player they had at Office Depot sold out on Monday (6/12/06 - if you are reading this after 6/16/06, the deals will probably be different)>
I like the player they talk about in the 2nd link. I've had a similar player for a couple of years, and my only complaints are that sometimes when I bump it it shuts off, and it doesn't allow you to have playlists.
You should be able to get the Evergreen (or similar) player for less than US$20, and you can sometimes get 128MB or 256MB SD cards free after rebate.
If you want to keep your eyes open for future deals, you can use the 3rd link.

There should be quite a number of lower price MP3 players out there. You should go and test it out based on a simple check list:
1. Look and Feel - make sure you like it - general apperance, LCD display and user interface selection.
2. Memory - enough for your needs
3. Features - MP3 player, FM radio, Voice Recorder, USB drive
4. Price - in your budget.
5. Additional features - software graphic equalizers, pictures, LED color effects in display, etc.
I think the decoding technology should be quite good already, so it may not make that much of a difference. But you should try it out.
The good news is, it is getting better and cheap everyday.
Shiro MP3 payers for example are quite OK.

I think you might have to spend a little more than $80, but less than $100; I have a Phillips MP3 GoGear. I bought it at Sam's last year just before Christmas for about $85. It has 512 mb storage which is enough for me. Newer versions have much more; I just bought a 6 GB version of this for my son's birthday at Sam's for $185. This player also has FM radio tuner.
I am very pleased with my MP3, and it is easy to use. It requires Windows Media Player to load files. If you register online, you can check for updates.

To tell you the truth, it is worth the little bit of extra money to invest in an ipod. The price difference is minimal, but the quality difference is undeniable. If I were you, I would spend the little bit of extra money and purchase an ipod.
