Granted there are some Idiot Rappers out there that talk about nothing that has any real value. But Common, Talib, Mos Def, T.I.
Kanye, Dmx, Tupac, Biggie, KRS-one, Outkast, those guys talk about real life sitatuions. Rap like any other genre has terrible artits, I don't classify it all as junk music. Rock for instance has some band that aren't even close to good but I wouldn't diss all rock becasue of some nuckle heads who got some studio time. Listen" I got knocked unconsious by a cop coming out of a club and arrested, I hired an investigator and the cop thought I was someone else. I got some money from civil suit I filed but it never should have happened." Some lyrics in Rap songs give you the confidence to face anything and not be defeated by it. If you don't understand Rap thats one thing but to hate it all together seems a bit extreme.

I don't hate rap (and I'm a 60+ grandmother). What I don't like is the profanity; the use of the "n" word; the "dissing" of women & police; the encouragement of drug and alcohol use; and the need to play it (as well as other popular music) so loud that my walls vibrate when you drive past.

The ability to string words together that stay true to the beat, rhyme, and make sense amazes me. Listening to a rapper is like listening to stories told by the grandmother around the fire circle long, long ago.

I don't hate rap. That's a big portion of what I listen to. However, if I was a mother of 2 or 3 kids, I wouldn't want them anywhere within earshot of rap music. Yes, some artists do rap about things that aren't so terrible, but, and you have to face this, MOST rap is about sex, money, and drugs. Rappers promote lifestyles that neither our children nor anybody else need to be following. Some rap is also affiliated with gangs and violence, which makes it even more unappealing to the general public. So, I think maybe if rappers cleaned up their act a little bit, maybe it would be more accepted.

I don't hate all Rap, But I do karaoke shows and some of the songs that the younger generation wants to sing, I can't allow due to the graphic nature of the song and/or words. I realize that they may sing about real life, but does that mean we have to use foul language to describe it all the time. I don't think a lot of parents know what their children are listening to. And I'm not limiting this to Rap, it occurs in other types of music, just seems to be a lot more in Rap.

Most people like it. There are really annoying white people that live for the stuff. I think some people are grossed out by the videos w/ too much booty in the pants. I like Common. Kanye's song about the Africans dyin for his diamonds and yet he still wears them what a tool. However, there are very few rappers like Common. The majority sound the same and have similar images/lyrics/videos. But it's a whole genre and it's just like how some people hate the whole genre of country and claim that they're all dumb. However there are some good country singers like Martina McBride and Brad Paisley. It's just a matter of taste, but some people overgeneralize.

Well since you asked. . . (promise not to take it personal?)
I hate rap because it of its subject matter
I know this a HUGE generalization, but the glorifying of violence, drugs, the hood, the victimization and women demoralizing, that covers a lot of rap songs.
I really hate the staccato delivery, there is no melody or very little melody, but it would not be rap if they sang, it would be SINGING!
I hate the beat to death formula (but I hate this in every kind of music) There is always a click track, there is no rise or fall of the meter because the band was jamming, there is very little music, very little harmony, no interplay between the musicians and the rapper
I cannot imagine it translates well live,
Rap really says NOTHING to me at an emotional level
I have not bought a rap record since RUN DMC (it was fresh then but people are still making the SAME record!)
But I am a white guy, in the suburbs, who is almost 40, so I am NOT supposed to like rap, am I?

You are right. I enjoy rap music, but some of the more recent stuff only talks about their riches, rides and bitches. Biggie, Tupac, Kanye, and even Eminem at least do tell stories when they rap. I like the rap from the 80's and early 90's the best of all.

Well, rap is definitely not singing and to call it "music" is yet even another story. Sometimes you have to admire someone who can ryhme off a long rap and keep it in some kind of rythm. But generally, most rap is not a pleasant message and there tends to be a lot of violence and political protesting. I prefer to listen to "music" as a form of escaping reality and a form of pleasure; not to be slapped in the face with someone else's problems and or complaints.

People hate anything they're threatened by. It's generally a cultural gap of one form or another. Age, Race, Socialization all play a part in why we are or are not entertained by something. I used to like rap back in the day. I hate it now because it's largely unimaginative, repetitive, sexist, racist, violent, misogynistic and just plain ignorant.

Good point. I don't hate all rap but simply got tired of it after 1996. It is all so redundant and boring. The same story another rapper. It just is not creative. Not enough musical influence.

Alot of radio stations play the songs and hype the artists that talk about sex, violence, and drugs. Not to mention, the music videos can be disgusting. I agree that not all rap is bad, but it is stereotyped just liek alot of things in this world. Unfortunately alot of people only believe in stereotypes...
