I think people who don't know what they're talking about say that homosexuals can choose to be gay or straight. Calling it a lifestyle choice puts the onus on the individual and makes it easy for homophobes and bigots to put blame on him or her for the way they are.
I'm to understand that sexual attraction and orientation is physiological and based on chemistry -- we don't choose who we fall in love with, and we're attracted to people we find attractive. Period. Anyone who thinks otherwise isn't doing their research.

I think people who talk about the gay lifestyle are talking about something very different than sexual preference (with or without realizing it). And while your sexual preference is not a choice, the way in which you choose to act on it is.
How open you are about your sexuality, the degree to which your mannerisms match or deviate from the social norm, the type of clubs you frequent (if at all), and the type of company you keep are all elements of any lifestyle. We've all encountered the gay man or woman whom we would have sworn was straight. It could be argued that such an individual, while homosexual, did not ascribe to the gay lifestyle.
That said, it does irritate me when people imply that one's sexuality is a choice.

News flash!!! Even some gay people see it as a lifestyle and do not want the label. I think it is genetic because I can not imagine wanting to be gay.

Lots of teenagers are choosing the gay lifestyle these days, because its the 'in thing' to be gay due to all the press they are getting. that aside, many people don't realise that your sexual preferance is not a choice, but something that you are born with.

It is not a lifestyle. It is their way of being - they realize they are gay and live according to their inner nature.
I disagree with calling it a lifestyle.

I don't think we choose be gay. Did everyone else choose to be straight? That's just who we are.
