It won't necessesarily burn the grass, but it will evaporate faster so the grass won't be able to absorb as much of it. So in effect, your'e wasting water. Much better to water before 9:00am, or after 6:00pm.

No, it will just evaporate. The best time to water grass is in the morning to give a chance to be absorbed into the soil and grass. Evening waterings are not recommended since it increases the chance of fungal diseases. For mature grass water deeply so it reaches the roots. Do not water for a short period since that promotes short roots. If you water deeply you shouldn't have to water the grass more than once a week. On the other hand if you are growing new grass, filling gaps, etc and just seeded water it lightly every day. If possible more than once a day.

Absolutely. The water on a sunny day (heat has nothing to do with it) will maginify the sun and in turn will act like a magnifying glass on an ant. The best time to water the grass is in the morning around sunrise.

yes it can. water late in the day i.e. past sunset or earliy in the morning before 9 am is usally best. plus if you water when it is sunny and hot out you lose more water to evaporation then actually gets to the roots of your grass

No, but you waste more water to evaporation.

"In most instances, your goal when watering is to moisten the lawn's entire root zone-from soil surface to 6 to 8 inches deep-and keep it moist. This usually takes 1 to 2 inches of water per week, either from rain or irrigation. This is the ideal. It ensures that roots grow deeply and that they always have a ready water supply.

DEEP AND FREQUENT
The key to meeting the ideal is to water deeply and infrequently. Irrigate once a week, applying the whole amount at once. Watering every day may seem as though your lawn is getting the best of care, but it's not. Frequent watering merely wets the soil surface. The roots proliferate where soil is moist but don't grow any deeper. A shallow rooted lawn doesn't have the resources to survive stressful periods and the constant moisture around the blades increase thatch and disease.

WHEN TO WATER
Early morning is the most efficient time to water. Municpal water pressure is at its peak, and there's usually less wind to distort the spray from its intended target. Also the lawn has all day to dry before nightfall. Wet foliage promotes diseases."

"About Watering Lawns
As a general rule, most lawns require about one inch of water per week from rain or sprinkling. But many people ask, "How long should I water to equal one inch?" Well, it depends on your water pressure and the type of sprinkler you choose — find out more by exploring the links to the right.

A few tips to keep in mind:

It's best to water early in the day. You won't waste water through evaporation, and watering at night puts your lawn at risk for developing mildew and fungus disease.
Don't give your lawn a light sprinkling. This promotes shallow roots, and it may not even reach the soil, depending on how much you water.
During dry spells or droughts, pay attention to watering restrictions.
Water deeply and infrequently (1/2" twice a week is enough) and don't waste water.
See the links to the right for more on watering lawns."
