A'ha! Although it is a good idea to clean the lint trap regularly, the overheating is more likely buildup that is occuring in the exhaust hose. There is a 4" exhaust flex-hose that comes out the bottom of your dryer and vents -- usually to the outside of your home.

Disconnect dryer from power. Disconnect the hose, inspect for clogs. Replace it ( $10 or so from Home Depot). Be sure the damper on the outside of your house isn't clogged or somehow preventing the damper from opening.

Finally, if this is re-curring, you should try to find a way to shorten the hose. Either move the dryer to a location closer to the vent. Or cut a new vent that is nearer the dryer. Ideally, the hose is no longer than about 6 to 8 feet.

A clogged dryer vent is a frequent cause of house fires. Be sure to take care of this problem!

The problem is usually in a full lint trap, or a clogged air hose. Dryers get lint all over, so these tend to clog up pretty bad after a while, which traps the hot air. Be sure to check the vent outside too.

You might also try moving the dryer, to see if there's a lot of lint under it, or behind it. Lint makes a good insulator, to trap heat in, so lint around here can be a problem too.

Since most heat rises, you should also clear any junk you off of the top of the dryer, but the lint is usually the main problem, and the biggest hazard!

Make sure that the fan motor is cleaned of lint and the vent hose isn't bent and pipe that goes outside isn't clogged. I just had my dryer serviced and the repairman told me to move the dryer away from the wall and take off the hose. If you have a leaf blower, stick it up to the hole that the dryer hose goes and turn it on. BUT, turn it on after you put it there. Also, make sure that there is nothing sitting on top of the dryer. That helped me and I had the same problem.

First turn it off. Empty it. Clean the lint filter and clean built up lint in the dryer exhaust hose. If that doesn't do it, call your utility company for them to check it out. Usually free...
