I seem to remember there was a solution to this but can no longer remember what it is. Perhaps fabric softener sheets?

Freezer tip is good, you can also close them up in a box of cat litter (new, of course) for a few days. Cat litter is one of the best preservatives you can use for storing books, and it doesn't take much!

If you can stand them up, slightly opened, outside on a sunny, low humidity day, they will air out. (Don't put them directly IN the sunlight) Fabric softener sheets might stain the pages. Charcoal is a great odor absorber, but it would be tricky to put the books and charcoal in one container without getting black smudge on the books.

You might put them in a container with some charcoal bricks. We had a freezer that was shut off accidently and it had a really bad smell. So we put a bag of charcoal in it and it absorbed the smell. Worth a try.

I got this tip from a preservationist at the historical society: Put them in the freezer.
